Lunch Harvest!

Last week Laura and I took a trip to my backyard to harvest some spinach, lettuce, and beet greens for our lunch! We had homemade tortilla sandwiches with garden greens, hummus, and orange peppers with chips and salsa on the side.

ValuMarket

My $90 bounty from ValuMarket, a locally owned grocery store in Louisville. It kind of looks like Trader Joes when you go in, but it doesn't have organic produce, local eggs, or very much of a granola section. You win some you lose some.

Happy Mother's Day everyone!

Mint for Habitat!

Ari and I are leading a Habitat for Humanity workshop tomorrow evening about home gardening, composting, and where to buy fresh produce. We mentioned this to the leader of our Aspiring Farmer class (put on by SAL Sustainable Agriculture Louisville) and he walked us over to the community garden to harvest a bounty of mint for the habitat families! Herbs are awesome!

Asian Market

This week is going to be Asian food week. Here is my $40 bounty from the Asian food market on the other side of town.

The People's Garden

One of my new favorite things is going to the People's Garden.  They have garden workdays every Wednesday and Saturday.  Today the garden got water from the city and they harvested radishes and salad greens and sold them to two Healthy in a Hurry Corner Stores on the Westend!  Things are moving along.  I planted basil in the beds that previously held radishes and got to feel the warm sun on my shoulders, the moist soil in my hands, and the peace of the outdoors.

Two kind women walked by the garden and came over to see what was going on- I got to explain to them the market garden, children's garden, and the community garden.  I offered them some radishes, but they didn't like them.  I'm not sure if this is a personal realization, but I've found that I pretty much love any kind of food if I'm the one to pick it out of the dirt and eat it.  I don't usually like radishes either, but these are so good and it's so fun to give them a little rinse and eat them in the garden!  We'll see if this is still the case when I have to eat beets and kale out of my garden...

More adventures from the People's Garden to come!

Stuffed peppers

Try these! They're really good. I fixed them for my friends Wendy and Mark for a Sunday lunch a week ago and they were quite impressed. And then you get to keep all of the leftover stuffing to have burritos the rest of the week! Mmm mmm good!

Routine eating

I was at a Whole Measures for Community Food Systems training last week in Lexington, where they fed us great local food and got to eat with great company from around the USA. Unfortunately, it has taken me several days to get back into the swing of things and preparing good food.

This weekend was a pretty bad few days for eating. On Friday night I cooked up everything in my fridge that was about to go bad- yellow and orange pepper, broccoli, mustard greens, zucchini- and fixed some organic angel hair pasta to go with it.
**Have you ever had organic pasta? I never expected it to be different, but it is- let me know what you think when you try it!
Unfortunately I've not been very hungry lately and I have never really like having to pick what I eat (I'm rarely craving anything other than chocolate and ice cream...) but I ate a good serving of that and went to the balloon glow with laura and her mom.

Saturday morning I had my regular granola/yogurt/honey and for lunch I went to the Cherokee Triangle Art Fair and had a brat and a beer. I don't remember what I had for dinner... Maybe leftover stuffed pepper stuffing in a tortilla?

Sunday I slept in and didn't eat anything till brunch at North Side Cafe, and then I ordered a very unbalanced plate of orange spice French toast. I ate two pieces, drank some water, an felt weird and tired for the rest of the day. I finally got myself to eat a clementine and half of a pb&j before going on a walk and then a 4 mile run with Olive.

The point of this story is I am ready to eat balanced meals once again! I'm still not very hungry when mealtimes come around, but I'm eating anyway.

Breakfast:
Yogurt, honey, granola

Lunch:
Lettuce from Mary Courtney's farm, sautéed veggies, with some tomato basil salad dressing.

Dinner: We'll see.

Here's a picture of the balloon glow on Friday!

Lunch: getting in touch with LETTUCE!

What's better than eating chocolate chip cookies and a salad for lunch? Eating chocolate chip cookies and a salad made of lettuce I picked from a local organic farm! So fresh, so real, with a little dirt on the side.

I often dream of eating flowers right out of the ground because they smell so delicious. The truth is, eating lettuce straight out of a muddy plot is just as AWESOME!

Do you know who picked your lettuce? Where it grew? How many chemicals were sprayed on it? How much of the $4 you spent at the grocery made it back to support the farmer's family?

I like getting to know my food- one product at a time. Today- lettuce. Tomorrow- I may need to break down the ingredients in my favorite chocolate chip cookies...

Fact: It can be hard to know how to go about getting to know your food. I've been feeling a little helpless moving to a new city and trying to be food conscious when I don't even know of all the options there are to get food! Here are a couple ways to get in touch with your lettuce and other food:

-Start a garden and watch how lettuce grows from seed to head! It's not natural for your veggies to be shiny and perfect. Embrace the dirt and brown spots and be amazed that God made it possible for us to grow our own food!

-Go to the farmers market! Walk up to a stand and start asking the farmer questions about her/his produce. Then, ask if you could come visit their farm! If they say no, move on to the next farmer- most of them are nice, love what they do, and want you to know about it.

-Look at the labels of the food you buy at the grocery store. Where was it made? Was it grown organically? Does the label even say where it was grown or does it only tell you from where it was distributed? What are they trying to hide?

Fiesta Friday

Breakfast:
You're never going to guess- I had pumpkin flax granola again!! With glass milk, of course.

Lunch:
Leftover veggie wrap made by Nate from the Shawnee Food Justice Class farm tour last night. Delicious.
Chips and salsa provided by Ari during our quarterly report discussion meeting. Man, what a blast that was. Luckily we had fiesta food so it didn't turn into a siesta.

Dinner:
Today was not a very well rounded meal day... I had chips and salsa for dinner, too. And a margarita. Then after a nice time with the dream team I went home and made chocolate chip cookies! Now I have a headache and Olive has been getting on my nerves- poor girl. Maybe we'll be on better terms in the morning.

Warning: tomorrow is Thunder over Louisville, the largest air show in the country. People are taking over this once dead city and parking their RV's in the lots downtown. The city has put up ugly orange fences around basically every patch of grass on the waterfront and the nice walk I usually take from my car to work every day has turned into a carnival land (complete with spinny rides, corndogs stands, souvenir stands selling sponge bob stuffed animals, and planes flying over the river doing flips and breaking the sound barrier).

Let derby season begin (insert batman voice here)

After the farm tour, we got to pick as much lettuce and mustard greens as we wanted! The plants were so beautiful and bountiful! I can't wait till my garden grows! I can already see the sprouts coming up!
